|One of La Plaza’s main events is the annual Fiesta celebration that takes place during the National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since 1980, Fiesta has been the premiere Latino cultural celebration in Indiana. Fiesta celebrates, educates, and shares the Latino culture through diverse mediums including art, music, dance, food, and cultural activities. The event is held the third Saturday of September at the American Legion Mall in downtown Indianapolis and attracts approximately 35,000 people.
This was my third year in attendance, and as always, I had a blast. Even though I missed all of the day events, I still had fun teaching salsa lessons in the children's area, and made it back for the evening partying around 8:30 pm.
Before getting my dance on, I stopped off at a peruvian stand and had a tasty, satisfying meal consisting of: roast beef, white beans, rice, and a mango juice. Then it was off to the stage to check out the entertainment.
As you'll see in the video clip, the bands were awesome. The voice of Mariachi Sol Jalisciense's lead singer was powerful and passionate. I don't speak spanish (Perdóneme. I'm working on it.) but it was clear that the song they sang was special to the audience. Everyone sang and shouted the lyrics at the top of their lungs. Orquesta Iluziones followed up with an amazing set. I was dancing so much, I almost forgot to film. The talented Stacie Sandoval was the guest singer, and as always, shined like a star.
I give this event a 4 out of 5, only because I'm comparing it to past Fiesta celebrations. But overall, it was a fun time. I always enjoy dancing and hanging out with old buddies, and meeting new ones.
